About Wheeler
Wheeler High School was established in 1965 and is home to over 2100 students. Located on Holt Road in northeast Cobb County, Wheeler has been recognized as one of “America’s Most Challenging High Schools” by The Washington Post. Wheeler is also home to The Center for Advanced Studies in Science, Math and Technology. This Magnet program offers an advanced curriculum to highly motivated students. Admission is open to all qualified eighth graders who reside in Cobb County.
Feeder Pattern: Elementary schools that feed into Wheeler are Brumby, Eastvalley, Powers Ferry, Sedalia Park, Sope Creek. East Cobb Middle School also feeds into Wheeler.
Academics
Wheeler offers classes on a 4 x 4 block schedule. Students take 4 classes each semester and earn 4 units of credit per semester. The typical schedule will contain 2 core classes and 2 electives, or 3 core classes and 1 elective. Both Honors and AP classes are offered for students pursuing a college prep diploma. Technical/Vocational courses are also available for students to become well rounded, or to prepare for the world of work or academia. Magnet program students take courses that specialize in Science, Math and Technology. By their Junior year, these students are taking classes typically found at the university level. Top colleges regularly recruit graduates of this program.
Athletics
The Wheeler Wildcats are part of the GHSA region 2-AAAAAA. 30% of all Wheeler students participate in the 24 Varsity and JV sports that are offered. Both Girls and Boys Basketball have Freshman teams as well as JV and Varsity. Wheeler Athletics have a long tradition of excellence. They have won State Championships in Boys and Girls Basketball, in Softball, Baseball, Wrestling, Golf and most recently, Girls Water Polo.
Fine Arts
Students have many opportunities to participate in the Arts at Wheeler. Band, Orchestra, Chorus, and Musical Theater allow students different areas in which to excel. The Wildcat Pride Marching Band has performed all over Georgia, as well as surrounding states and the Macy’s Thanksgiving and St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York. Over the years they have won numerous awards and marching band championships. The Orchestra program at Wheeler has exploded over the past few years, growing from 30 to 220 students. There are three levels and membership in each is based on audition. Orchestra students have recently travelled to Virginia Beach and Orlando to perform in festivals, walking away with an “Excellent” rating each time. Chorus and Musical Theater are also elective classes that offer several performances a year.
